Why am I getting error "Splunk.License: failed to add because: license is expired"?

We started using Splunk's Free version to see how powerful this tool was and the expected happened. The license was about to expire. We contacted Splunk, we paid for the license, I added the license (before expiring) to our Splunk instance, and everything was working fine. Some time passed and the license expired. I tried adding the license again and now, I'm getting the following message:

Bad Request — In handler 'licenses': Splunk.License: failed to add because: license is expired

Any ideas? Thanks!

"I tried adding the licence again."

Once it's expired it's expired. Licences run for a fixed period. They cannot be re-used.

Sorry for late response. Thanks for the help.

I requested a reset license, and that solved the problem, which was caused by license violations.

You need to upgraded your Splunk from Free to Enterprise.

You paid for a license or you asked for a free extension? It seems like you got the latter. A paid license never expires and if you have a limited license (free extension), once the date is past the end-date of the license, it cannot be reinstalled.

It's not true to say a paid licence does not expire. It IS possible to purchase a perpetual licence, but they don't come cheap (and they still have an expiry date, just one that's 20 years or so hence). Ordinarily paid licencing expires annually.

That is true, there is a subscription model now but as far as I know, it is far less commonly purchased and it would not expire in just a few weeks/months like this one did.

Thanks for the reply.

No, we started using a free version of Splunk and then, we paid for a new license. We added the paid license to our Splunk instance and it still expired.

You said "Some time passed and the license expired." Did you request/purchase new license after that and trying with newly purchased license OR trying with old?
