I am getting this error on deployment client.
Is license required for configuring deployment server?

Deployment servers - i.e. configuration servers which distribute configuration settings to multiply deployed instances of Splunk in the form of "application" bundles - are a feature of an enterprise environment, along with things like user authentication. Enterprise features are not available to to free users. Answering your question directly, yes you need a licence (or license, in American terms) to create a deployment server.

@grijhwani

I am not sure if you are still facing this issue.

You might want to check your server.conf and remove the following lines

[license]
active_group = Free

Hi,
I have updated the license.It is showing Enterprise license.
Still my deployment client throws error:-
07-05-2013 08:55:08.759 +0530 WARN DeploymentClient - Unable to send phonehome message to deployment server. Error status is: not_connected
HttpPubSubConnection - SSL connection with id: connection_10.114.90.133_8089_splkdplyclient.local_splkdplyclient
I am using Ubuntu12.04 and my deployment environment contains 1-DS,1-UF,1-Indexer.
I am following http://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/latest/Deploy/Extendedexampledeployseveralstandardforwar...
document.

Thanks a lot for addressing me on this.

The free version is exactly identical to the licenced version, but with self-imposed limitations. The only difference between the two is - quite literally - the purchase and application of an Enterprise licence.

Thanks for the quick response.
But what I was thinking the version which is available on the splunk site come with some sort of default license.
My question is :-
Is this different from enterprise edition or this is same but with some limitations?

If the system you are seeing this error on is a forwarder, then this can be ignored. Forwarders do not have license for a deployment server, they are the client. Your deployment server (the full Splunk instance that you enable the deployment server on) needs to have a license for it to work, yes.
