Why doesn't double-clicking highlight text in the Splunk 7.2 XML editor?

Hi there,

If you double click a piece of text on any application on any computer ever, it highlights that word. However, if I am trying to edit my XML code in Splunk 7 it does not do that. I have to quadruple click (the first click does nothing, the second click does nothing, the third click highlights the ENTIRE code, and the fourth click then highlights the word). Once in a while, probably 1/15 tries, it does highlight a word on a double click. I have no idea why it decides to do this.

It seems pretty trivial but if you're trying to you know, write code, it becomes pretty detrimental to doing so. Especially since sometimes quadruple clicking is the answer and sometimes double clicking is, and you never know which is going to work. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks a bunch

Edit: Double clicking works fine in the rest of Splunk. It's only the XML editor. I'm running Splunk 7.2 on Chrome with Ubuntu 14 back-end, but I don't think think my environment is the problem.

Still hasn't been fixed as of feb 22 2019. I have no idea how anyone could do dashboard dev in the editor with this bug around but I guess it's not a concern to splunk. Sigh.

Literally whenever anyone asks me about choosing a SIEM the first thing I say is that you can't double click to highlight in Splunk dev environment and they're like.... oh....

Also wondering how on earth a QA team missed this in the first place

It's a bit of a bodge, however however I use a mouse with custom macros (Logitech MX Master). One of the macros I have configured is to perform the following tasks.

  • Left Click
  • ctrl + left
  • shift + ctrl + right

I also have macros for copy and paste too which help a lot when lifting and shifting segments of xml.

The only scenario where this doesnt work is when you want to double click and drag to quickly highlight multiple words.

we are on 7.2.1, it seems like a bug introduced in 7.2 and higher versions.

I guess the only way is to do is a quadruple click as you already figured it out OR I would copy the xml code to a text editor.

Yeah, one solution is to double click, pause for a second, but be ready to turn it into a quadruple click if it doesn't highlight after the double which is most of the time. lol. It's pretty difficult though, and when it is in fact a double click, I overclick pretty often since I'm expecting most of them to be quadruples, and instead have to turn it into a sextuple (six? idk) click. fun times
