Upgrading from 3.x to 5.0

I'd like to upgrade a Splunk instance running 3.4.8 all the way up to 5.0. I know there are going to be a few gotchas, so could you tell me which versions I need to make stops at along the way? Am I going to need a new license? What should I do to ensure that the upgrade goes off without any unforseen problems?

The recommended steps would be to go from

3.4.8 to 4.0
4.0 to 4.1
4.1 to 4.2
4.2 to 5.0

You will need a new license for the upgrade from 3.4.8 to 4.0.

Also, start by taking a backup of your machine, just in case.
