How can I extend the disk and assign the remaining space to LV_ROOT?

Hi,

My splunk is out of disk space. I resized the disk on vmware but I have no clue how to extend it.
I was under the impression that I have to use pvextend first but I can be wrong.

How can I extend the disk and assign the remaining space to LV_ROOT?

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root
9.3G 8.9G 16M 100% /
tmpfs 10G 0 10G 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1 477M 27M 425M 6% /boot
