I need to change the host name in inputs.conf in Linux, can anyone tell me the Linux commands I need? Also, are there instructions for making the changes using the deployment servers ?

Assuming you want to change the host=______ in an existing inputs.conf on a linux system:

First try this because you're probably best suited for nano if youre a windows guy

cd /opt/splunkforwarder/etc/inputsApp/default/
nano inputs.conf

make your edits then press ctrl+o to write Out the edits, and ctrl+x to eXit the nano editor

if nano doesnt work, you'll have to use vi/vim

vi inputs.conf

go to the host= line, press i for insert, make your changes, press escape to exit insert mode, type :wq and press enter ( : opens a context/command line interface at bottom of vi, w is for write, q is for quit)

All this assumes inputs.conf is in that directory "/opt/splunkforwarder/etc/inputsApp/default/"... yours will most definitely be somewhere else.

now restart splunk to reload the inputs.conf:
/opt/splunkforwarder/bin/splunk restart
