Can I set up a role to access the jobs, but not give them the ability to administer all objects on the system? It seems that the capability "admin_all_objects" is the only one that allows users to view any job they send to background which is a pretty broad capability

Any user should be able to see jobs that they created (and sent to the background). Individual jobs behave as objects in the Splunk system, and can be assigned read and write permissions by the admins or job owner, but this is not exposed through the web based UI except in the "Get link to results..." dialog, which shares the current search with all users.
